Shenae Grimes Calls Out Penn Badgley Over Hollywood Double Standard
Shenae Grimes is speaking out against a perceived “double standard” involving Penn Badgley. The actress recently expressed her frustration over the widespread praise the You star received for requesting a reduction in his on-screen sex scenes, highlighting a disparity in how male and female actors’ boundaries are treated in Hollywood.

Back in 2023, Penn Badgley made waves after disclosing his decision to limit intimate scenes in the hit Netflix thriller. He explained that the move was rooted in a desire to honor his marriage to Domino Kirke-Badgley.

During an appearance on the Podcrushed podcast, Penn shared his perspective: “Fidelity in every relationship, including my marriage, is important to me. It’s got to the point where I don’t want to do that.”

The actor recounted a conversation with You showrunner Sera Gamble following the third season, where he broached the subject of scaling back the show’s frequent love scenes. According to Penn, Gamble was immediately supportive, leading to a “phenomenal reduction” in sexual content for the subsequent season.

Penn’s revelation sparked a significant public discourse at the time. While some observers were critical, a large segment of the audience applauded him for establishing professional boundaries and for having those limits respected by his employers.

“He was uncomfortable and he spoke up. Good for him,” one social media user commented. Another fan echoed the sentiment, stating, “This is awesome for him, more actors should be comfortable setting boundaries and having those boundaries respected!”
However, Shenae Grimes admits that watching the positive reception to Penn’s news was a painful experience for her.

“I was sitting there like, are you fucking kidding me?” Grimes remarked during an episode of her talk series, Lost the Plot. “When I read about the applause that he was getting from the public for speaking up for himself and his relationship and respectfully deciding not to proceed with any sex scenes… it just kind of broke my heart a little bit.”

“Because I’m like, fuck man,” she continued, reflecting on the gender gap in the industry. “How many women have tried to speak up for themselves over the years in these shoes or have just been brushed past or labeled as difficult and hard to work with or just told, ‘Tough shit. We’ll find somebody who will do it anyway?'”

Grimes emphasized the frequency of this issue for female performers, adding, “I don’t have the exact statistic, but my guess is a lot… a fucking lot.”

“And then of course leave it to a fucking man to actually have his wishes respected, actually be commended for making those wishes and standing up for his relationship and his personal boundaries,” she said, noting the irony of the situation.

The 90210 alum also opened up about her personal struggles within the entertainment world. As a married mother of two, she has found that her discomfort with filming nudity or graphic intimacy has cost her numerous job opportunities. “I’ve even gotten more auditions than I can count through in the last year… that say, ‘Must be comfortable with nudity and graphic sex scenes,'” she revealed. “And I’ve responded saying, ‘ok well, I’m not, so should I bother memorizing the lines?'”

“The response is no,” she added. “They don’t even wanna see me read for it.”

Grimes recalled a specific instance from just a few weeks ago where she was offered a role but felt the explicit scenes were gratuitous. When she questioned the necessity of the content, producers insisted the “steaminess” was vital for marketing. Because it was a “non-negotiable” point for her, she said that “door closed in [her] face.”

This isn’t a new phenomenon for the actress, who says she has been navigating these hurdles since her youth. “I have been having those exact conversations with directors pretty much since I was a teenager,” she noted. “Except when I had those conversations about my boundaries, it didn’t make headlines or position me in a positive light.”

Despite her pointed critique of the industry’s culture, Grimes clarified that she holds no personal animosity toward Badgley. “I’m sure Penn’s great,” she said. “He seems really funny.” Her goal was simply to call out the unfair double standard regarding how personal boundaries are perceived and honored in Hollywood.
