1. Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson recently revealed she lost a role because the creative team perceived her as “pompous” and “full of herself.” The reason for this harsh critique? She dared to have manners.

She recalled the experience on Hits Radio, saying, “I had a callback, and I went into the room, shook everyone’s hand, and introduced myself. Then I did the scene and left. The feedback I got was that because I introduced myself, I was ‘schmoozing’ and being cocky.” She added, “I was like: ‘What?’ I didn’t get the job because I had manners… It was pretty crazy.”
2. Chris Pine
Before becoming a blockbuster leading man, Chris Pine lost out on playing Ryan Atwood in The O.C. because of his struggle with acne.

“I had awful skin as a teenager, and it started breaking out again after college,” he explained. “I was auditioning for a teenage melodrama. I understand they wanted pretty people doing pretty things, and bad acne isn’t the key to that.” He admitted the experience left him with “a little PTSD,” calling it one of the most traumatic points of his early life.
3. Elle Fanning
When she was just 16 years old, Elle Fanning was denied a role because a producer deemed her “unfuckable.”

“It’s so disgusting,” she said. “I laugh at it now, but it definitely made me very aware of myself.” That wasn’t her only bizarre rejection; she also lost a major part because her Instagram follower count wasn’t high enough. “I didn’t get a part once because I didn’t have enough followers at the time,” she shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
4. Priyanka Chopra
Global superstar Priyanka Chopra was once rejected from a film because a studio executive claimed she had the “wrong physicality.”

She told InStyle, “I asked my agent, ‘Do I need to be skinnier? Do I need abs?’ And then my agent broke it down: ‘I think they meant they wanted someone who’s not brown.'”
5. Zoë Kravitz
Before she landed the role of Catwoman, Zoë Kravitz wasn’t even allowed to read for The Dark Knight Rises because she was considered “too urban.”

“Being told I wasn’t able to read because of the color of my skin, and having that word ‘urban’ thrown around, was really hard,” she told the Observer. Thankfully, she eventually got her justice by starring in The Batman.
6. Meryl Streep
Even the greatest actress of our generation, Meryl Streep, faced vile insults. While auditioning for King Kong, she overheard producer Dino De Laurentiis ask his son in Italian, “Why do you bring me this ugly thing?”

Streep, who understood Italian perfectly, replied to him in his own language: “I’m sorry I’m not beautiful enough to be in King Kong.”
7. Maggie Gyllenhaal
Maggie Gyllenhaal was once told she was “too old” to play the romantic interest of a man who was 18 years older than her.

“It was astonishing to me,” she told The Wrap. “It made me feel bad, then angry, and then it made me laugh.”
8. Michelle Pfeiffer
Michelle Pfeiffer almost played Vicki Vale in the 1989 Batman, but Michael Keaton—her ex-boyfriend—reportedly blocked the casting because he was trying to reconcile with his ex-wife at the time.

Co-star Robert Wuhl explained that Keaton was “firmly against” the casting. Luckily, Pfeiffer eventually secured her iconic role as Catwoman in the sequel, Batman Returns.
9. Mindy Kaling
In a truly surreal moment, Mindy Kaling auditioned to play herself for a network sketch show and was told she wasn’t “attractive or funny enough” to play the part.

“That network is no longer on the air, and The Office became a massive hit,” she told the Guardian. “Karmically, I feel vindicated.”
10. Catherine Zeta-Jones
At just 19 years old, Catherine Zeta-Jones was told she was “too old” and “too pretty” for a role in Aspects of Love.

“I told the director I could be as not pretty or as not old as he wanted, but it didn’t do any good,” she recalled.
11. Tiffany Haddish
Comedian Tiffany Haddish lost a job because she wasn’t “as urban” as casting directors expected.

To catch these inappropriate comments, Haddish used to hide a voice recorder in her bag and leave it in the audition room. She would then listen to their “feedback” in her car afterward.
12. Regé-Jean Page
Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page was reportedly denied the role of Seg-El in Krypton because a DC executive allegedly said Superman couldn’t have a Black grandfather.

13. Sheryl Lee Ralph
Sheryl Lee Ralph was fired from a pilot in the ’80s because a producer claimed she wasn’t “Black enough.”

Because of that, several attendees were quizzed on their favorite Bey hits, including Colman Domingo, Angela Bassett, Nicole Kidman, and Chase Infiniti. In context, the question was totally relevant, and Paul’s body language could be seen as brushing off her artistic impact.
