Nick Cannon Parenting Double Standard Sparks Massive Backlash
Nick Cannon—media mogul, father of 12, and a consistent source of controversial parenting takes—is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

From his political stances to his unconventional family structure, Nick is never afraid to voice an unpopular opinion. However, he is currently facing a wave of online criticism after admitting that while his 15-year-old son has permission to date, his twin sister is strictly forbidden.

To provide some context: Nick shares his eldest twins, Monroe and Moroccan, with his superstar ex-wife, Mariah Carey. The duo just celebrated their 15th birthday last week. According to Nick, Moroccan is already exploring the dating world, but Monroe is under a total lockdown.

During a recent appearance on the TMZ podcast, Nick stated, “My son been dating, and I’ve allowed it. I’ve encouraged it. But my daughter…no, absolutely not.”

When podcast host Towanda Robinson challenged his logic, noting that it made “no sense,” Nick didn’t shy away from the label. He confessed, “It’s absolutely a double standard.”

“I know I get in trouble a lot because I say things with my chest, but there is a difference when parenting a son and then when parenting a daughter,” he explained. “I am more protective of my daughter because there’s things out there that I have to protect my daughter from, like, as we know, there’s certain types of individuals that you want to keep your daughter away from.”

He further argued that the stakes are “different” for his son. “My son is not calling me like, ‘Dad, she hit me!'” he remarked. “He’s not doing that, but if somebody puts they hands on my daughter, I’m going to jail.”

When the conversation shifted to whether he feared “gold diggers” targeting his son, Nick brushed it off. “No! He got a whole lot of money. His mama Mariah Carey. He’s good!”

When pressed on exactly what age Monroe would finally be allowed to date, Nick refused to give a specific number. Instead, he suggested she could only go out if she could articulate a clear plan for the date—or if she brought her brother along as a chaperone.
“Y’all all can hang out,” he said. “But you ain’t going one-on-one with no little bastard anywhere. I’m preparing her for college.”

Social media users were quick to dismantle his reasoning, calling out the outdated and frustrating logic behind his parenting style.

“So your 15 yr old daughter cant date but the 15 yr old girl thats going to go out with your 15 yr old son can date????” one critic posted on X. “Men never make sense.”
On Reddit, one user labeled Nick’s remarks as “misogynistic bullshit.”
“Double standards at its finest,” another commenter chimed in.
“Teach boys not to be shit, not girls how to protect themselves from it,” another viral post suggested.

Another user offered some deep parenting advice: “Maybe raise your kids so they trust you and can talk about you about dating, navigating growing up etc. Forbidding ur daughters from dating doesn’t stop them from doing it, it just makes them not come to you when they face problems.”

A large portion of the audience felt these comments highlighted Nick’s own character flaws. “This guy is so emotionally immature. Holy shit,” one person commented, while others simply labeled him a “loser.”

Some fans completely tuned out his advice, with one person tweeting, “He can’t even remember all his kids names I’m not taking him seriously.”
These viral remarks follow previous headlines where Nick claimed he was attempting to change his lifestyle so his five daughters would “learn from [his] mistakes and not date people like their dad.” That sentiment also drew fire, as critics noted he was focused on controlling his daughters’ choices rather than teaching his sons to be better partners.

“‘Girl Dads’ like this are the worst,” a Reddit user argued. “Hyper critical of their daughter’s choices. But do fuck all to help their sons make better choices. Ensuring the cycle of self doubting women and cocksure abusive men like them continues.” Another agreed, suggesting that Nick—who has 12 children with six different women—should focus on teaching his sons “not to treat women and date them” the way he has in the past.

Looking at one side of the coin, Beyoncé actually served as a co-chair for the Met Gala this year. Because of that, several attendees were quizzed on their favorite Bey hits, including Colman Domingo, Angela Bassett, Nicole Kidman, and Chase Infiniti. In context, the question was totally relevant, and Paul’s body language could be seen as brushing off her artistic impact.
