The lives of child stars are rarely as glamorous as they appear on screen, and during the Golden Age of cinema, protections for minors were virtually nonexistent. While modern Hollywood has its issues, early film history is littered with accounts of horrifying treatment and exploitation. Here are the heartbreaking revelations from classic Hollywood child stars who survived the system to tell their stories.

1. Shirley Temple: The Dark Side of America’s Sweetheart

Shirley Temple remains the definitive child icon, beginning her career at just three years old. In her revealing memoir, Child Star, Temple detailed the “black box” discipline method used on set. When child actors misbehaved, they were locked in a dark sound booth and forced to sit on a large block of ice to “cool off.”

“I suffered from styes, earaches, and various health issues because of that box,” Shirley recalled. Beyond the physical punishment, she later criticized her early roles as a “cynical exploitation” of innocence. Off-camera, the abuse was even more sinister; she alleged that MGM producer Arthur Freed exposed himself to her when she was only 11.

Even as a teenager, the danger persisted. At 17, producer David O. Selznick allegedly chased her around his office after locking the door. She attributed her escape to her “agility as a dancer,” narrowly avoiding a traumatic encounter.

2. Jackie Coogan: The Tragic Reality of the First Mega-Star

Jackie Coogan was the first true child superstar, famously appearing in Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid. He was a merchandising powerhouse, with his face on everything from dolls to peanut butter. By the 1920s, he earned a record-breaking $500,000 salary from MGM.

However, upon reaching adulthood, Coogan discovered a devastating betrayal. His parents had squandered his millions. Following a bitter legal battle with his mother, he found that only a fraction of his fortune remained. He eventually walked away with just $35,000 after cashing in his own life insurance.

His tragedy led to the Coogan Law, designed to protect the earnings of young performers. While he found later fame as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family, the emotional scars remained. His daughter recalled him weeping, lamenting that the “beautiful child” he once was had become a “hideous monster.”

3. Jackie Cooper: Psychological Warfare and Stolen Innocence

Jackie Cooper rose to fame in Our Gang and became the youngest Best Actor Oscar nominee for Skippy. To get him to cry on cue, director Norman Taurog—his own uncle—employed psychological torture. Taurog once had a guard “shoot” Cooper’s dog off-camera, leading the boy to believe his pet was dead just to capture a scene of genuine grief.

In his autobiography, Please Don’t Shoot My Dog, Cooper described a childhood stripped of normal activities like bike riding. The abuse continued into his teens; at 17, screen legend Joan Crawford initiated a ritualized six-month affair with him, which included a bizarre routine of bathing and “powdering” the teenager.

4. Judy Garland: A Lifetime of Forced Addiction

Judy Garland was pushed onto the stage at age two by her mother, whom she later called “the real Wicked Witch of the West.” By age 10, her mother was already dosing her with amphetamines for energy and sleeping pills for rest, sparking a lifelong battle with substance abuse.

By the time she filmed The Wizard of Oz at 16, the studio’s demands were lethal. MGM forced her onto a restrictive diet of black coffee, chicken soup, and cigarettes to keep her thin.

Garland also faced rampant sexual harassment. She alleged that MGM head Louis B. Mayer habitually groped her, and other executives threatened to destroy her career if she didn’t comply with their sexual demands.

5. Mickey Rooney: The High Cost of Early Fame

Mickey Rooney, Garland’s frequent co-star, shared a similarly grueling fate. Performing since he was an infant, Rooney was a drug and alcohol addict before he hit 18. He recalled a childhood of poverty before Hollywood, once living in a car and hunting rabbits for food.

On the set of the Mickey McGuire shorts, Rooney faced dangerous conditions. He described being “cold and surrounded by firecrackers,” once nearly drowning when a prop cart fell into a sinkhole—all for a lunch of a single banana.

6. Freddie Bartholomew: A Family Feud Over Fortune

Freddie Bartholomew was a British child star who became a sensation in the US with David Copperfield. When the money started rolling in, his estranged birth parents suddenly appeared, sparking a brutal multi-year legal battle against the aunt who actually raised him.

The litigation was so expensive and lengthy that it “drained dry” his entire childhood fortune. By the time the dust settled, the millions he earned were gone, spent entirely on legal fees and settlements for his parents.

7. Elizabeth Taylor: The Child Forced into Womanhood

Elizabeth Taylor began her career at 10, but she found the studio system “grim.” By 16, she was being cast as the wife of men twice her age. She famously remarked that while the world saw a sophisticated woman, she was internally a “terrified little girl.”

9. Bobby Driscoll: Disney’s Forgotten Boy

Bobby Driscoll was the voice and face of Disney’s Peter Pan. Despite his success, he was bullied at school and allegedly abused by his parents. When he hit puberty and developed acne, Disney dropped him immediately.

Driscoll found out he was fired when he was barred from the studio lot. “I was carried on a silver platter and then dumped into the garbage can,” he later said. He became a heroin addict at 17 and tragically died young and unidentified in an abandoned building.

Hayley Mills was a Disney staple in the 60s, but the pressure to remain “the perfect child” took a toll. She struggled with bulimia as a teenager in an attempt to maintain her youthful appearance.

Baby Peggy was a silent film powerhouse, making 150 shorts before she turned six. Her father “trained” her through extreme obedience and fear. She was often put in life-threatening situations, like being thrown from moving vehicles or placed in deep water.
