Beloved comedian Martin Short is opening up after enduring a devastating personal tragedy.

Earlier this year, Martin’s daughter, Katherine Short—whom he adopted alongside his late wife Nancy Dolman—tragically died by suicide at age 42. Katherine was one of three children raised by the couple.

“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the family shared in an official statement released shortly after the tragedy. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

During a recent appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, Martin discussed Katherine’s passing publicly for the first time. Reflecting on the tragedy, he admitted, “It’s been a nightmare for the family.”

“But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal,” the Only Murders in the Building star explained.

The pair tied the knot back in 2012, which was three years after the tragic passing of Stanley’s first wife, Kathryn Spath. While appearing on Jenna Bush Hager’s Open Book podcast, the actor delved into how their romance blossomed and candidly spoke about the 21-year age difference between them. Currently, Stanley is 65 while Felicity is 45.

Stanley recalled that he initially met Felicity, a literary agent, at the 2006 premiere of the original Devil Wears Prada. Their paths crossed again in 2010—about a year after his wife’s death—at the wedding of Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.

“It just sort of made sense, even though there is this age gap of 21 years,” the actor noted. “I knew her family, or I knew her sister was one of my best friends. And we just hit it off.”

Stanley admitted that he “wasn’t sure” if he would ever walk down the aisle again following the loss of Kathryn, with whom he shared two children. However, his connection with Felicity proved undeniable. “We had a lot in common, even though we had nothing in common. It just sort of stuck. But I think she changed my life in the sense that she gave me a sense of security. She gave my children a sense of security. And she’s fun. Like, she’s fun to hang out with.”

1. To start, it has been more than two decades since Martha Stewart famously spent five months in federal prison following her insider trading scandal involving stockbroker Peter Bacanovic. Back in 2004, the lifestyle mogul was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and lying to federal agents. She regained her freedom on March 4, 2005, and has remained incredibly successful and “booked and busy” ever since.

2. Long before he became the face of Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. faced significant legal troubles throughout the 1990s. Following a 1996 arrest for drug and weapon possession, he was ordered to undergo supervised drug testing. After missing a test, he served four months in the Los Angeles County jail. In 1999, he was sentenced to three years for skipping another test, serving 15 months total before his release. In 2015, former Governor Jerry Brown officially pardoned him.

3. In May 2007, reality icon Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in custody for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. She checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility on June 3 and was officially released by June 26.

4. Khloé Kardashian was arrested for a DUI in March 2007 and initially received three years of probation. After she failed to complete her mandatory roadside cleanup and alcohol education sessions, she was sentenced to 30 days in jail in July 2007. However, on July 18, she served less than three hours of that sentence before being released due to jail overcrowding.

5. Lindsay Lohan has famously made six different trips to the Los Angeles County jail, though she ultimately spent less than two weeks total behind bars for drug and alcohol convictions. Her briefest stint occurred on November 15, 2007, where she was processed and released in just 84 minutes due to overcrowding issues at the facility.

6. In November 2010, rap legend Lil Wayne was released after spending eight months at the Rikers Island facility in New York on a gun possession charge. While his original sentence was for one full year, he was granted an early release based on his good behavior while incarcerated.

7. Lori Loughlin pleaded guilty and served two months in prison for her highly publicized involvement in the 2019 college admissions scandal. In addition to her time served, she was ordered to pay a $150,000 fine, perform 100 hours of community service, and undergo two years of supervised release. She was freed in December 2020.

8. Tim Allen faced a life-altering arrest in 1978 after being caught with over 650 grams of cocaine at an airport in Michigan. While he faced the possibility of life in prison without parole, he cooperated with authorities and ultimately served two years and four months. He was released in 1981 and went on to launch a massive acting career.

9. Back in 2008, actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced to three years in federal prison and hit with a $5 million fine for tax evasion. Following a failed appeal in 2010, he started his sentence that December and remained in custody until April 2013. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “I hope I came out a better person. I came out a clearer person.”

10. In 1987, Sean Penn was arrested after he physically assaulted an extra on the set of the film Colors. Since he was already on probation at the time, he was sentenced to 60 days for the assault and a reckless driving charge. The Academy Award winner served 33 days in jail before being released.

11. Lil’ Kim was released in July 2006 after completing nearly 10 months of a sentence in Philadelphia. In July 2005, the rapper had been sentenced to a year and a day in prison plus a $50,000 fine for committing perjury before a federal grand jury regarding a 2001 shooting in Manhattan.

12. Mark Wahlberg was only a teenager when he served 45 days in jail following a 1988 assault on two Vietnamese men in Massachusetts. In 2014, the actor requested an official pardon for the felony convictions, but he ultimately decided to drop the request two years later.

13. Michelle Rodriguez had several run-ins with the law during the 2000s. In May 2006, she served a little over four hours of a two-month sentence for probation violations in Hawaii. Later, in January 2008, she was released after serving 18 days of a 180-day sentence, once again due to overcrowding in the Los Angeles jail system.

14. Felicity Huffman was another high-profile name caught up in the infamous 2019 college admissions scandal. She served 11 days of her total two-week sentence. Her punishment also included a $30,000 fine, 250 hours of community service, and a year of supervised probation.

15. In October 2018, Jersey Shore star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino was sentenced to eight months for tax evasion. He was also ordered to pay $123,913 in restitution, a $10,000 fine, and complete 500 hours of community service. He finished his prison term in September 2019 and returned to TV shortly after.

16. In 1999, Matthew McConaughey was famously arrested after police found him dancing and playing the bongos naked in his Austin, Texas home. He was booked into jail on “possession of marijuana and resisting transportation.” The actor eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor noise violation and paid a $50 fine.

17. On January 16, 1980, Paul McCartney was detained after authorities found nearly half a pound of marijuana in his bags at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport. This led to a nine-day stint at the Tokyo Narcotics Detention Center before he was released and deported on January 25, 1980.

18. Before he became a Hollywood icon, Danny Trejo spent years in and out of various correctional facilities for charges including armed robbery. While serving time at San Quentin State Prison, he became a champion boxer. After his release, Trejo became a drug counselor before falling into acting in the 1980s.
