16 Famous Celebrity Stage Names Born From Hollywood Industry Rules
Often, celebrities choose a stage name for personal branding. However, many stars are forced to pivot because of industry mandates—either due to duplicate names in acting unions or agents claiming their real names weren’t “marketable.”
Here are 16 celebrities who had to change their names for professional or personal survival:
1. When Jelena Hadid was in primary school, her teacher constantly confused her with a classmate named Helena. To fix the confusion, the teacher asked her mother for a nickname. She’s been known globally as Gigi Hadid ever since.

She shared with Vogue, “My mom was called [Gigi] by her mother when she was younger, but only around the house. I was called that when I was really young, following that family tradition.”
2. At age 16, David McDonald transitioned to the stage name David Tennant because a David McDonald already existed in the UK actors’ union. Later, when joining the Screen Actors Guild in the US, he was told he couldn’t use the name unless he legally changed it to match his professional identity.

He told the Guardian, “Faced with the prospect of working under two different names on either side of the globe, I had to take the plunge and rename myself! I’m now more intimately associated with it than I had ever imagined.”
3. Following an audition, casting directors told Krishna Bhanji his performance was “beautiful” but they didn’t know how to place him. After he rebranded as Ben Kingsley and re-auditioned, they immediately asked, “When can you start?”

He remarked to Radio Times, “It says more about the 1960s than anything. The irony is I changed my ‘clunky’ Asian name to something universal just to play Mahatma Gandhi. That is the true irony.”
4. Early in her career, Tahliah Barnett performed under her childhood nickname, Twigs. After another artist named Twigs initiated a dispute, she pivoted to FKA Twigs—standing for “Formerly Known As Twigs.”

5. Abel Tesfaye originally adopted the moniker The Weekend because he disliked his legal name at the time. However, due to copyright issues with a Canadian band of the same name, he dropped a vowel to become The Weeknd.

6. On Twitter, Chloé Wang revealed she changed her name to Chloe Bennet because she had bills to pay, and Hollywood’s systemic bias made casting directors “uncomfortable” with her Chinese surname.

She told the Daily Beast, “The first audition after the change, I got booked. I want to be clear to my fans: I didn’t change it to hide being Chinese, but so my personality could define me rather than my ethnicity.”
7. Yvonne Strzechowski became Yvonne Strahovski due to “Old Hollywood thinking” that encouraged stars to anglicize names to make them less of a “mouthful.”

She told Collider, “I thought, if people can say Schwarzenegger, they can say my name. It rubbed me the wrong way, so I settled for a phonetic spelling. I don’t think I’d make that same choice today.”
8. When Lucille LeSueur signed with MGM, the studio felt her surname sounded too much like “sewer.” They actually launched a magazine contest for the public to pick her new identity—Joan Crawford.

9. Margarita Cansino started her career as Rita Cansino. Her first husband and agent decided the name was “too ethnic” for mainstream success, pushing her to use her mother’s maiden name. She found global fame as Rita Hayworth.

10. Before his debut album, MCA Records gave John Mellencamp a choice: change his name or go back to Indiana. They forced the name Johnny Cougar on him to create a “hot and wild” American image.

He eventually evolved his billing to John Cougar, then John Cougar Mellencamp, before finally reclaiming his birth name nearly twenty years later.
11. When Emily Stone began acting, her birth name was already registered. She briefly tried Riley Stone for six months before landing on the name we know today.

She told W Magazine, “I did a guest spot on Malcolm in the Middle, and they kept calling for ‘Riley!’ on set. I didn’t realize they meant me. That’s when I knew I couldn’t be Riley.”
12. Michael Fox found his name taken in the SAG registry. He avoided his middle initial ‘A’ because he didn’t want headlines reading “Michael, a Fox.” He chose Michael J. Fox instead.

The ‘J’ was a deliberate tribute to the character actor Michael J. Pollard.
13. Ramón Estévez felt the pressure of the era to adopt the name Martin Sheen, a decision he later viewed as a lack of courage to stand up for his heritage.

He told Closer Weekly, “The best influence I had on my son Emilio was to convince him to keep his name. His agent wanted him to be a Sheen, and he refused. I thank God he didn’t.”
14. Harry Bratsberg was immensely proud of his Norwegian roots, but industry pressure forced him to anglicize his name to Harry Morgan.

He once told the Chicago Tribune, “I wish I hadn’t changed it. I like my name; it sounds like I look.”
15. Michael Douglas discovered his name was taken by a legend, and his nickname belonged to a TV host. Searching for a professional identity, he nearly became Michael Jackson.

He told Stephen Colbert, “Can you imagine?” He eventually picked Michael Keaton simply by browsing the “K” section of a name directory.
16. Finally, when Diane Hall joined Actors’ Equity, her name was already in use. She tried Dorrie Hall and Cory Hall before settling on her mother’s maiden name to become the iconic Diane Keaton.

To get you up to speed: After news broke that Barry and Sabrina reportedly split in late 2024 after a year of dating, the internet was flooded with rumors that he had been unfaithful to the “Espresso” singer with influencer Breckie Hill. Despite the denial, the wave of online negativity aimed at the Saltburn star was so intense that he eventually felt forced to delete his Instagram account and release a statement regarding the “hate” he was enduring during that period.

While appearing on a recent episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Barry addressed those persistent cheating rumors directly. He shared a candid look at how the public narrative has fundamentally altered his life—and his perspective was truly heartbreaking.

“I came off Instagram and social profiles,” he confessed during the interview. “I’ve stopped going to events. I’ve stopped, you know, just, socializing. It’s because, you know, there was a narrative out there that was never really sort of even spoken on, a narrative that’s not true, and I never confirmed or said anything about it. And, you know, I just disappeared.”

Reflecting on the unique struggles of “having a relationship in the public eye,” Barry pointed toward the video where Breckie denied the rumors. “No one seemed to latch on to that video,” he noted, expressing frustration over how the public perception has shifted since the breakup.

“I’m not asking for people to become my fan and like me because that’s not normal either,” he continued. “But I’m asking for people to stop assuming and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me and dragging me down in any way you can, involving my parents who are no longer with me… just absolutely disgusting and vile. There’s videos on TikTok literally going, ‘I hate him.'”

Shannon Elizabeth OnlyFans Earnings: American Pie Star Wealth
If you’re a millennial of a certain age, you know Shannon Elizabeth from a few things. Between the American Pie franchise, Tomcats, Scary Movie, and even a Jay and Silent Bob movie or two, she was arguably one of the queens of the “movies you watched at a sleepover party” subcategory.

Shannon’s acting career has remained fairly steady since then, but she recently took on a new role entirely: OnlyFans creator. She joined the service just a few weeks ago, telling People at the time that starting her own OnlyFans was because “I’ve spent my entire career working in Hollywood, where other people controlled the narrative and the outcome of my career. This new chapter is about changing that, showing off a more sexy side no one has seen, and being closer to my fans.”

Well, just a few weeks later, People has a new report on how the OnlyFans foray is going for Shannon — and as it turns out, she’s seemingly struck content-creator gold in the process.

A source tells the publication that Shannon brought in “more than seven figures” on the first week she joined OnlyFans. Seven figures! Let that sink in.

The source adds that Shannon “is really making a name for herself” on her page, and they also note that there is no full nudity featured on it. “She is super happy she now gets to take control and be engaged with her fans,” the source adds.
